"Prairyerth" is an archaic geological term for the soils beneath the once magnificent and expansive prairies and grasslands of the Great Plains. Before the arrival of Euro American settlers, the tallgrass prairie was the dominant ecosystem in the area we know as Iowa. Today, Iowa’s "prairyerth" supports one of the most productive farming economies in the world.
